Home/Food Guide

Indian food,
made easy.

First time eating Indian? Brought a friend who’s nervous about spice? This is the cheat sheet: what the words mean, what to order and how to eat it.

The words

Nine words, and you’ll read our menu like a regular.

Tap any dish to find it on the menu.

Tandoor

tun-DOOR

A clay oven with charcoal in the bottom. It runs much hotter than your kitchen oven, which is how tandoori chicken gets its char while staying juicy inside.

Try: Tandoori Chicken · $15.99

Naan

nahn

Soft, bubbly flatbread slapped onto the inside wall of the tandoor. It bakes in minutes and arrives puffed and blistered. Use it as your spoon.

Try: Garlic Naan · $2.99

Paneer

puh-NEER

Fresh Indian cheese that holds its shape when cooked, a bit like halloumi’s milder cousin. Vegetarians, this is your new best friend.

Try: Kadhai Paneer · $13.99

Daal

dahl

Lentils, slow-cooked until they turn silky. The bowl Indian grandmothers make when someone needs looking after.

Try: Daal Makhani · $13.99

Biryani

bir-YAH-nee

Long-grain basmati layered with spices, herbs and meat or vegetables, then cooked so every grain soaks up the flavour. A meal in itself, served with cool raita.

Try: Goat Biryani (with bone) · $19.99

Chaat

chaht

India’s street-food snacks: crunchy, tangy, sweet and spicy in a single bite. Think loaded nachos, but with chutneys and yogurt.

Try: Samosa Chaat · $10.99

Lassi

LUSS-ee

A chilled yogurt drink. Mango lassi is the one to start with: thick, sweet and the perfect antidote to a spicy bite.

Try: Mango Lassi · $4.99

Raita

RYE-tuh

Cool yogurt with vegetables. Spoon it next to anything spicy; it’s the fire extinguisher of the Indian table.

Try: Mix Raita · $4.99

Spice

How hot is hot?

Most Indian food is about flavour, not fire. Here’s where to start.

Keep it mild

Creamy, fragrant and gentle. Great for first-timers and kids.

  • Butter Chicken$16.99
  • Malai Tikka$15.99
  • Shahi Paneer$13.99
  • Malai Kofta$13.99
  • Matar Paneer$13.99
  • Five Spice Spl. Palak Paneer$13.99

Bring the heat

For people who put hot sauce on everything.

  • Veg Vindaloo$13.99
  • Chilli Chicken$15.99
  • Chilli Paneer$14.99

Too spicy? Don’t reach for water. Grab a spoonful of raita or a sip of mango lassi. Dairy cools the heat; water just spreads it around.

Soup

Sooke rain? Indian soup.

Soup weather

Tomato Soup · $7.99

Tomato soup with cream and Indian herbs. Familiar enough for anyone, different enough to be interesting. Dunk a garlic naan in it.

Soup weather

Chicken Soup · $8.99

Chicken broth with mild Indian spices. The bowl for a grey West Coast afternoon or the first sniffle of the season.

At the table

How to eat it like you grew up with it.

Share everything

Indian meals are family-style. Order a few dishes for the middle of the table and pass them around.

Naan is your spoon

Tear off a piece, pinch up some curry, eat. No one is judging, and it tastes better that way.

Rice goes first

Spoon a little rice onto your plate, then curry on top or beside it. Mix as you go.

Finish sweet

Gulab jamun or rasmalai to close, and a Five Spice tea if you have room.
